About Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette
Every wine narrates its own saga. And anyone who claims otherwise is certainly spinning a yarn. If you are among those connoisseurs who relish unraveling the fateful twists that lead to the birth of each unique bottle, then your sanctuary of choice is undoubtedly Domaine Weinbach.
In the northern reaches of Alsace, nestled at the base of the Schlossberg hill (esteemed with Grand Cru status), lies this wholly family-operated winery, which pens its legacy through each pour, tasting, and label. The majority of their creations pay tribute to family members, christening their most exquisite wines with names that commemorate their kin. Colette Faller, the wife of Théo Faller and mother to Catherine Faller (the current proprietor), is the muse behind Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette. After all, no tribute can be too grand for a mother. This is especially poignant considering that Colette Faller stepped up to helm the family vineyard following her husband's demise. Alongside her were her daughters Catherine and Laurence (who passed away in 2014), and together they succeeded in upholding the estate's status, renown, and quality. No small feat. Thanks to Colette, the riesling (a varietal emblematic of this northern part of France) has maintained its superior quality and its distinctively unique bouquet. Specifically, this varietal is the crowning glory of Alsace, held in high esteem by the majority of vintners. Indeed, on the slopes of Schlossberg, it reigns supreme (encompassing 75% of the cultivated area). This is largely due to the granitic soils that perfectly retain heat, ensuring that the riesling matures impeccably within the estate's venerable vineyards, some over 50 years old.
In this region, Domaine Weinbach spans 38 hectares that are cultivated using biodynamic methods. As forerunners in ecological viticulture, the winery initially melded organic care with biodynamic practices. Ultimately, the latter prevailed after proving to be the superior cultivation method for achieving the most unadulterated expression of each vineyard. Naturally, all tasks are carried out by hand. And the harvest - the most critical of these tasks - is no exception. Following meticulous selection, Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette arrives at the winery where it is gently pressed, exerting minimal force to yield a pristine, high-quality must. From there, the extracted grape juice is transferred directly into oak barrels where Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette will undergo fermentation. While many Alsatian wineries are transitioning to stainless steel, Domaine Weinbach continues to embrace oak, a hallmark of their identity. The wood remains integral throughout the vinification process, as Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette will spend between eight to ten months (depending on the vintage) maturing within this medium.
As if unfolding a chapter, each glass of Domaine Weinbach Riesling Cuvée Colette immerses you in the tapestry of this family's history. Take our word for it. Not even a Netflix series could keep you as captivated.
