Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta, and Rioja Oriental: Rioja wines
Rioja stands as one of Spain's most significant and renowned wine-producing regions. Nestled in the Ebro Valley, its territory spans La Rioja and parts of Álava and Navarra, and is divided into three major zones: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. Although they share the same designation of origin, each zone offers distinct climate, soil, and altitude conditions that impart unique nuances to their wines.
Diversity is indeed one of Rioja's greatest strengths. Its vineyards are predominantly planted with red varieties, particularly tempranillo, though garnacha, graciano, and mazuelo also play significant roles. Among the whites, varieties such as viura, white tempranillo, and sauvignon blanc stand out. The result is a broad array of styles, ranging from young and fresh wines to grand reserves capable of evolving over decades.
