About Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs

Épernay exudes the tranquillity of French provincial towns, with its well-kept pavements, gothic cathedral, and the elegant 19th-century mansions lining the Avenue de Champagne. In one of those stately homes where the world's finest sparkling wines are crafted, lies the Maison Belle Époque, an inhabited house that guards secrets as extraordinary as the largest private collection of Art Nouveau in Europe, featuring stained glass, sculptures by Auguste Rodin, and paintings by Toulouse-Lautrec. Everything in this haven breathes the love story that began in 1810 between the botanist Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Adèle Jouët. After marrying, they combined their surnames and founded a champagne house with the aim of distinguishing themselves from the predominant red wines and championing the chardonnay, a delicate variety that imparted floral notes and unmatched elegance. Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs is the direct heir of that pioneering intuition.

From the Épernay region, at the heart of the AOC Champagne, Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs pays homage to the typicity of the French landscape. The maison meticulously selects its grapes from the most renowned vineyards of the Côte des Blancs, where it owns 65 hectares of land. The vines thrive on deep chalky limestone soils, a white and porous terrain that absorbs moisture, regulates the plant's temperature, and imparts a distinct mineral profile. The area's climate combines continental and Atlantic influences, creating a thermal contrast between day and night that allows for a slow ripening of the grapes without losing acidity. The leading grape is chardonnay at 100%, cultivated under a philosophy of sustainable viticulture that seeks to protect the vineyard's balance and biodiversity.

For the production of Perrier-Jouët Blanc de Blancs, the winery follows an artisanal and rigorous process. Harvesting is done by hand to preserve the integrity of the bunches. Once at the winery, the whole grapes undergo a gentle pressing to extract only the purest juice. Alcoholic fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, the process in which malic acid is converted into lactic acid to soften the wine's acidity. The cellar master completes the blend by adding up to 15% of reserve wines from previous vintages to enhance complexity. Finally, after the second fermentation in the bottle and ageing on lees, the wine undergoes disgorgement and is finished with a light dosage of 8 grams per litre of sugar.
