About Weingut Prager Hinter der Burg
Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria are the three countries growing Grüner Veltliner, a white grape cross between Traminer and another local variety.
In 2008, in Austria, 32.6% of the cultivated area was planted with this variety, making it the main player in many Austrian wineries. This is true for Weingut Prager, the well-known Austrian winery in Wachau. After Riesling, the undisputed queen, Grüner Veltliner is the most vinified variety and used to make Weingut Prager Hinter der Burg.
Next to a castle, on a hill in Weißenkirchen, lie the old vineyards where the life of this wine begins. These vines are over 60 years old and now looked after by a team led by Ilse and Toni Bodenstein, the couple who have been running the company since 1990. After their wedding, the bride’s father handed over these 16 hectares of vineyards in Wachau, one of the most unique and unusual areas in the world, where the geological make up is a spectacle worth studying. And this is exactly what Toni did. When he received the gift he had already specialised in studying the local soils and characteristics, which have been declared a World Heritage Site.
When talking about the Wachau soils, it is best to speak in terms of plots, as the variety and mixture of soils sometimes makes it impossible to agree on a uniform geological pattern. This results in a very wide range of wines, with unique chacteristics, subtleties and plenty of nuances. It’s these that Weingut Prager strives to enhance. In their Weingut Prager Hinter der Burg wine, these nuances are provided by the very shallow gravel and mineral soil on the high slopes. In this barren land, struggling with the forests and the cold that penetrates from Bohemia, the vineyards have to fight to survive and produce their best fruit.
Finally, fermentation in steel tanks and a short aging on the lees will finish forging the very special character that is part of Weingut Prager Hinter der Burg.
2021 | Weingut Prager Hinter der Burg 2021 is a mineral, light greenish-yellow coloured white wine with silvery reflections. The nose is very fine and elegant, with notes of white fruit (apple), herbs, spices, pineapple and lime. The palate is sweet, mineral and balanced, with body and a very fresh acidity. It holds onto that touch of lemon that makes it perfect for pairing with savoury dishes. |
