About Waterkloof Circumstance Mourvedre Rosé

As Periander of Corinth, one of the Seven Sages of ancient Greece, eloquently stated, "let your happiness not be a consequence of favorable circumstances, but rather a creation of your own making.” It is with this life philosophy that the wines from the South African winery Waterkloof were conceived. This family-run farm was established by Paul Boutinot in 2004 on the slopes of Schapenberg in Helderberg (Stellenbosch), perched 300 meters above sea level and merely 4 kilometers from the shores of False Bay. Here, the Circumstance range of Waterkloof Estate is born. This collection of single varietals is the result of a series of astute decisions made in response to the serendipitous factors that annually influence both vineyard and winery.

Within this collection, Boutinot and his young, gifted winemaker Nadia Barnard astonish us with Waterkloof Circumstance Mourvedre Rosé, a rosé crafted from the mourvedre grape variety. Starting with the commitment to preserve the estate's natural vegetation, wildlife, and flora (a winery championed by WWF for Biodiversity), they practice organic farming with biodynamic treatments. The vines, swept by the Atlantic winds, thrive on living soils with naturally low yields. The grapes are hand-harvested and then gently pressed as whole clusters to extract only the finest juice. The must is naturally settled for 12 hours before being transferred to wooden fermenters where spontaneous fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine is aged on its lees for a minimum of 6 months. Finally, it is bottled unclarified, with light filtration and a small addition of sulfur.

Thus, Waterkloof Circumstance Mourvedre Rosé is presented, a culmination of judicious choices made in the face of the vineyard's presented circumstances. A fresh and flavorful rosé that will brighten not only your meal but your day as well.
