About Vivanco Brunés

Many rural areas boast a rich and ancient history, replete with legends and folk tales involving witches and demons. These narratives often form an integral part of the local folklore and are perpetuated through oral tradition across generations. In Briones, a municipality located in the region of La Rioja, Spain, the legends of witches and demons inspired American Gerald Youhanaie to design an eye-catching red devil-shaped corkscrew (which also serves as a paperweight) that is showcased in one of the world's largest corkscrew collections at the Museo Vivanco de la Cultura del Vino. This piece is selected by the Vivanco family to symbolize the image of Vivanco Brunés, a wine intended as a tribute to the people of the town of Briones (known as Brunes in the medieval era), who are the true custodians of these enduring traditions.

Crafted from a selection of two vineyard plots owned by the family and cultivated within the municipality of Briones under the principles of organic farming, Vivanco Brunés is a wine made from Tempranillo and Maturana Tinta, indigenous grape varieties of the DOCa Rioja. Influenced by the Atlantic climate and grown in diverse, stony and friable soils, the vines are farmed ecologically and the grapes are handpicked at the peak of ripeness. In the winery, after meticulous selection and destemming, the grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged for 12 months, partially in French oak barrels, partially in concrete vats, and the remainder in stainless steel. Finally, it is bottled and rests for 9 months in the cellar before being released to the market.

Reviving the tradition of village wines as interpreted by the esteemed oenologist Rafael Vivanco and his team, Vivanco Brunés is a red wine born from a highly distinctive terroir. It is an homage to the ancient and rich traditions of the village.

Vivanco Brunés 2020 is a richly concentrated red wine exuding aromas of ripe black fruit, complemented by spicy undertones and hints of oak. On the palate, it is profound, silky, and well-structured. A medium-bodied wine with substantial tannic heft and enduring finish.
