About Viña Sastre Pesus
Viña Sastre Pesus is a wood-aged red wine made by the Sastre brothers with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot varieties in the D.O. Ribera del Duero (Castilla y León).
Viña Sastre is one of the leading wineries in the D.O. Ribera de Duero. Founded in 1992 in the village of La Horra (Burgos) when Rafael Sastre decided to stop selling the grapes grown by the family in order to make his own wines instead. This work results in small, carefully crafted wines that perfectly reflect the expression of a landscape.
Viña Sastre Pesus comes from a selection of grapes from their best vineyards. These vines are a minimum of 80 years old and lie at 814 metres above sea level, on clay-limestone soil. The grapes are traditionally cultivated without using mineral fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides and then harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness.
Viña Sastre Pesus is vinified separately with native yeasts and a controlled temperature. The wine is then naturally stabilised, the tanks are taken outside and finally the wine ages for a minimum of 22 months in new French oak barrels.
Viña Sastre Pesus is a quintessential and powerful wine with plenty of extraction. A modern wine from Ribera De Duero which is only made in the best years and in a very limited production of about 1,500 bottles.
2015 | Viña Sastre Pesus 2015 is a mature red wine with ripe fruit aromas, very toasty notes and smoky touches with a mineral background. The palate is powerful, concentrated and voluminous. It has abundant tannins, a silky texture and a dry and very warm finish, reminiscent of chocolate and aromatic herbs.
2011 | Viña Sastre Pesus 2011 is a mature red wine with dominant oak aromas, spicy notes of vanilla, clove and cinnamon and hints of ultra ripe black fruit. On the palate this wine is full-bodied with plenty of extraction and huge tannins. A powerful and very silky wine. The finish is long and persistent with a very spicy aftertaste.
2009 | Viña Sastre Pesus 2009 is a mature red wine with complex and intense aromas of wood, spicy and smoky notes and hints of very ripe black fruit. On the palate it is meaty, warm and full-bodied. A well-structured wine where the fruit and wood are balanced and the tannins are extremely powerful. The finish is long, silky and very persistent.
2003 | In the mouth, this wine is elegant, tasty and fruity. It is consistent and expressive. Sensations of the fresh and stewed black fruit, cocoa, English chocolate, coffee beans and aromatic herbs stand out. Cherry red colour with maroon edges. Bright wine. Powerful and complex wine. Fruity aromas and toasted hints of the wood which embrace this wine. In the background, mineral nuances and spiced notes are noticed. |
