About Vietti Roero Arneis
If you’re reading this, it must be because you really love Italian wines. You probably like to get lost in details about production methods and tasting notes, and you’re likely an expert on what they drink in Northern Italy (one of the best wine regions in the world); but are you sure you know about every single one of the denominations there? Because that’s no mean feat. Piedmont alone has a total of 58 D.O.C and D.O.C.G. areas. That’s a fair few! Some of them, like Barolo and Barbaresco are well known, but there are other less popular ones that also have some surprises, like the D.O.C.G. Roero Arneis. If you’ve never heard of it, we recommend getting started with Vietti Roero Arneis, a white wine made by one of northern Italy’s great producers. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
The Vietti Roero Arneis wine is made in stainless steel tanks, where it ferments slowly and remains in contact with its lees before bottling. This step, where the wine is left to settle, ensures that they get the best side of the Arneis, one of the area’s typical grapes known in the local dialect as “rascal” or “rogue”. This is mainly because this variety traditionally ripens faster than other grapes in the area, like Nebbiolo, which meant sometimes the quality was not the best. However, this has now changed and under the protection of the D.O.C.G. Arneis, these white wines are becoming the best in Piedmont. The Vietti Roero Arneis grapes grow in vineyards in Santo Stefano Roero, a locality in the heart of Roero, where clay-limestone soils abound and support the 30-year-old vines.
Following a manual harvest, which takes place in mid-September, Vietti Roero Arneis is destemmed and gently pressed. From there, the must is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments slowly at a temperature between 14°C and 16°C. Halfway through this process, the Vietti Roero Arneis tank is sealed to reabsorb a small amount of natural CO₂. It then spends a while on its lees until it is finally bottled.
For many years, the wines made in the D.O.C.G. Roero Arneis have been fairly ignored, but that has been changing since 1980 thanks to certain producers who have managed to get the best out of this variety. Bodegas Vietti is one of them. So don’t miss the opportunity to try Vietti Roero Arneis.
