About Ultreia Saint Jacques
"Ultreia" is a term deeply associated with the Camino de Santiago, where it literally means "beyond" and is used as an expression of encouragement and hope for pilgrims embarking on their journey. However, this term not only evokes the spirit of the Camino but has also been embraced by one of the most iconic winemaking projects in El Bierzo and Spain. The creator of this wine, Raúl Pérez, acknowledged as one of the finest winemakers in the region and popularly known as the "mago de la mencía," focuses on crafting nearly artisanal wines that stand out for their remarkable expressiveness, power, and elegance. And all at a surprisingly affordable price. Pérez, a profound expert of the mencía variety, tends to his vineyards with absolute respect for nature and the biodiversity of the terroir, allowing him to produce wines that faithfully reflect the character of the soil and climate of Bierzo.
The most affordable wine in the range, Ultreia Saint Jacques is crafted from 100% mencía sourced from very old vineyards on clay-limestone soils. They are cultivated respectfully and hand-harvested. Once in the winery, the grapes ferment in 3,000 and 5,000-litre wooden truncated-cone vats without temperature control and with extended macerations. Afterwards, the wine ages in barrels and used truncated-cone vats. Finally, it is bottled without filtering or fining.
Ultreia Saint Jacques is a testament to a career in constant evolution. A surprising red that is undoubtedly worth far more than its cost. A mencía that not only celebrates the legacy of Raúl Pérez but also carries the label "going beyond" in its purest sense, exploring new frontiers of complexity and style without ever losing its authenticity.
