About Torbreck RunRig Shiraz

For many years, David Powell worked as a lumberjack in the Scottish woodlands. Consequently, it's hardly surprising that when he founded his winery in 2004, the majority of the names were inspired by that region. From the company's name (Torbreck is a tribute to one of the Scottish forests), to its wines, such as Torbreck RunRig Shiraz.

The latter's name not only indicates that it is made from the syrah grape variety but also alludes to the RunRig system, a land distribution method practiced by Celtic clans in the Highlands that was based on communal management of plots. This philosophy is in alignment with Powell's practices from the outset, where, always adhering to organic cultivation and environmentally friendly principles, he used grapes from local vintners to produce his wines. In the case of Torbreck RunRig Shiraz, the grapes are sourced from old vineyards, divided into 6 individual plots located in Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Moppa, Ebenezer, Light Pass, and Greenock.

After the harvest (between March and April), Torbreck RunRig Shiraz is brought to the winery and will be vatted in French oak barrels (half of them new and the rest previously used), where it will undergo both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation spontaneously and uncontrolled, resting on its lees for a period of time. In total, the maturation of Torbreck RunRig Shiraz will not exceed 30 months. It will then be bottled.
