About Tokaji Oremus Late Harvest
As with most things that have been discovered throughout history, the origin of Tokaji wine (wines from the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in Hungary), came about by chance when, due to the wars with the Germans and Turks, the harvest was delayed, causing over-ripening. This is how people discovered this sweet wine made from botrytized grapes, part of the Tokaji Protected Denomination of Origin, which for many decades was the fashionable wine among European nobility. The Oremus winery, owned by the prestigious Spanish winery Vega Sicilia since 1993, has one of the best located and most symbolic Tokaji vineyards in the region. Add to this the recruitment of a top professional team, and the essence of one of the world’s most coveted wines remains healthy and in tact.
Among the gems coming from this prestigious region of Hungary, Oremus presents Tokaji Oremus Late Harvest, one of the winery’s rarest wines made from clusters selected at the end of the harvest from different local varieties like Furmint, Zéta, Hársevelü and Sargamuskotál. The grapes are harvested by hand in two or three shifts to combine healthy, overripe grapes with others affected by “noble rot” (botrytis). Once in the winery, fermentation takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels for 30 days and naturally stops at around 12% alcohol. Finally, the wine rests for 6 months in small wooden barrels and is rounded off for 10 months in the bottle.
Tokaji is the first wine known to have been made from botrytized grapes, and Tokaji Oremus Late Harvest is a good example of this essence that has been preserved over the centuries. A sweet, fresh and harmonious wine where the botrytized grape and the overripe grape combine to perfection.
2021 | Tokaji Oremus Late Harvest 2021 is a complex sweet wine with aromas of ripe yellow fruit, citrus notes and hints of noble oak. The palate is elegant, fine and mellow. A wine with a sweet fruity character whose bright acidity gives it the perfect balance. |
