Apart from being a good wine connoisseur, Giuseppe Stella was also a music teacher. Since then, the link between vines and music has been solidified at Stella Giuseppe, the winery that this man founded in 1920 in the Monferrato region of Piedmont (northern Italy). The latest generations of the family business, his namesake Giuseppe and his sons, Massimo and Paolo, continue to pay tribute to this visionary by producing a couple of wines including Stella Giuseppe Giaiet Barbera d'Asti Superiore, a single-variety Barbera made in the D.O.C.G. Barbera d'Asti Superiore.
This top classification is based on very specific activities from the vineyard to the winery, where the sole objective is to guarantee quality in the production of these wines. This special care begins in the vineyard, where only the best grapes are harvested for vinification. In this case the Barbera is grown on the sunniest hills of Asti and Monferrato where the property owns 1 hectare with four different plots where this variety grows on sandy-limestone soil.
After the harvest, Stella Giuseppe Giaiet Barbera d'Asti Superiore is destemmed and very gently pressed in perforated boxes. Once prepared, the must macerates for 10-12 days and, after this, it is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments. Once the Stella Giuseppe Giaiet Barbera d'Asti Superiore wine has been made, it is aged for 5 months in the same tanks and another 18 months in French oak barrels. This last part is what makes the difference, since the minimum requirements of the Superiore classification are 12 months of aging (of which at least six must be in barrels and the rest in bottle). Stella Giuseppe Giaiet Barbera d'Asti Superiore more than meets these requirements, as the year and a half in the barrel is followed by 6 months of resting in bottle before being sold.
The best version of Piedmont that is only suitable for the most demanding palates.
