About Sassotondo Poggio Pinzo Ciliegiolo
A volcanic eruption is one of the most dangerous and, at the same time, most magnificent natural disasters that can occur on the planet. When a volcano erupts, it emits ash clouds, lava and creates volcanic bombs. Once the eruption has finished, volcanic scoria can be found around the volcano. This is a type of material that comes from a volcano. It is actually formed from magma, a mass of molten rock found in the Earth’s interior, which, once it is released to the outside world, turns into lava. It is because of this scoria from the eruption of the Poggio Pinzo volcano, in the Sovana and Pitigliano area, in the Maremma Toscana (Italy), that Edoardo Ventimiglia and Carla Benini sensed the enormous potential of this territory for viticulture in 1990. That is why at their Sassotondo winery they began a mission to promote the undervalued Ciliegiolo variety and to investigate the benefits of volcanic soils.
After years of research, Sassotondo Poggio Pinzo Ciliegiolo was born, a red wine made from Ciliegiolo grapes from a vineyard with this scoria from the eruption of the Poggio Pinzo volcano near Lake Bolsena. Hence the name of the wine. The vineyards were planted in 1995 on this original medium-textured volcanic tuff soil and are cultivated using organic agriculture. Once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested by hand and taken to the winery. The grapes are destemmed and vinification begins in 7-8 hectolitre terracotta amphorae. These same amphorae are then filled and covered so that the wine remains on the skins for another 12 months. Finally, it is pressed and transferred to stainless steel tanks and, after a month, it is ready for bottling.
With Sassotondo Poggio Pinzo Ciliegiolo, not only do Edoardo and Carla demonstrate the benefits and originality of volcanic soils, but they also highlight the value of a variety, the Ciliegiolo, that had previously been under-recognised in the DOC Maremma Toscana.
2018 |
Sassotondo Poggio Pinzo Ciliegiolo 2018 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe black fruit, herbal notes and hints of flint. On the palate, it is intense, mineral and persistent. A full-bodied wine with silky tannins that are perfectly integrated with the acidity. The finish is fruity and savoury. |
