About Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino
Its story began in a small restaurant in Barbaresco, where Giovanni Gaja made the wine he served with the menu himself. Here, in the northwest of Italy, the history of GAJA wineries began. Now the fifth generation continues to write the story of one of the leading and best known wine producers, pioneers in exporting their products and Italian prestige to the rest of the world.
They are partly responsible for Brunello di Montalcino being one of the best known Italian wines in the world. This wine in particular is a red, made solely and exclusively in this municipality with sangiovese grapes (also known as brunello), discovered in the 19th century by a group of winegrowers who cloned this grape. The discovery was a wine of great longevity, which can be aged from 10 to 30 years.
Bodegas GAJA also produces it thanks to the 40 hectares of vineyards that the winery acquired in Pieve Santa Restituta (southwest of the Montalcino D.O.C.G.), a hilltop town located in the heart of Tuscany (40 km south of Siena). The vines grow at different altitudes, from 120 to 650 meters, with different microclimates depending on where they are located. At an altitude of 400 meters there is occasional snowfall, while other lower altitudes enjoy a dry Mediterranean climate, with rainfall in spring and late autumn. In the field, the manual work will be meticulous, dry pruning and hand-picking the best grapes for Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino.
Yields cannot exceed 80 quintals per hectare. Later, once fermented, Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino will be aged in oak barrels for two years, with a minimum aging of 4 months in the bottle.
