The AOC Alsace, nestled in the northeast of France, is distinguished by its significant Germanic influence evident in its wines. Alongside its neighbors Austria and Germany, it produces some of the most renowned riesling whites in the world. These single-varietal wines are celebrated for their aromatic, floral, and spicy characteristics. While this trend is widespread, an increasing number of producers are daring to deviate from the norm to experiment with new styles. Such is the case with Pierre Frick, a trailblazing vintner who, through a philosophy of minimal intervention, manages to craft pristine wines with an unprecedented level of character and depth.
Pierre and his family own 12 hectares of vineyards in the village of Pfaffenheim, situated in the Upper Rhine region, merely a few kilometers south of Colmar. They have been cultivating organically since 1970 and with biodynamic certification since 1981, across diverse terroirs that allow for the production of an extensive array of Crus and grape varieties. Among their offerings, Pierre Frick Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Steinert hails from a Grand Cru predominantly composed of limestone, where riesling is cultivated. Harvesting is, of course, done by hand, and the grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with only indigenous yeasts. Subsequently, the wine is aged in old foudres for 10 months. Intervention in their wines is non-existent; at most, they are lightly filtered and bottled with a minimum addition of sulfur.
Given that Alsatian riesling is currently en vogue in the wine scene, Pierre Frick Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Steinert breaks into the market with its excellence. A Grand Cru of marvelous complexity, it has the potential to evoke profound emotions even several years down the line.
2019 |
Pierre Frick Riesling Alsace Grand Cru Steinert 2019 is a luscious white wine suffused with fruity aromas, delicate undertones of toasted hazelnuts, and mineral nuances. On the palate, it is lively, effervescent, and succulent. A full-bodied wine with a zesty acidity that counterbalances the sweet element, culminating in a crisp and enduring finish. |
