About Piero Gatti Moscato Piemonte
Everything was clear for Piero Gatti. They’ve never looked back. And when in doubt, they decided to leave the D.O.C.G Moscato d'Asti. They said the main reason was that the harvest dates imposed by the denomination were not right for their grapes, which, being south-facing, ripened much faster than the rest of the denomination’s vineyards.
So, this winery with more than 100 years of history became part of the D.O.C Piemonte, founded in 1994, where the rest of the vineyards in the same situation found a home. This is the origin of wines like Piero Gatti Moscato Piemonte, a single-variety sparkling wine made from Moscato (the area’s native variety).
Piero Gatti’s vineyards lie on the Moncucco hill, in the municipality of Santo Stefano Belbo, right in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont (northern Italy). Traditionally, this area has always been identified as one of the best for growing this grape. If the quality of this calcareous soil is combined with the special care taken by this company (with completely organic and manually cultivated vines), excellence and quality are more than assured.
Following the manual harvest, the Piero Gatti Moscato Piemonte grapes reach the winery and are destemmed. This process, where the berry is removed from the stem, is followed by a very gentle pressing, which creates the must. This high quality juice is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments with selected yeasts at about 16°C. The work of the yeasts lasts about 5 days and, after this time, it is bottled.
Today, Rita and Barbara, Piero Gatti’s wife and daughter, are at the helm of this ship in a venture that continues to focus on development and innovation. In fact, in 2019, Barbara introduced the screw cap for international orders, which was a wise move with an eye to the future, but without ever forgetting what her father and grandparents taught her.
