About Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli
Attributed to Pliny the Elder, the eminent Roman author, naturalist, and military figure of the 1st century, "In vino veritas" is a renowned Latin phrase meaning "in wine, there is truth". It is in pursuit of this truth that Josep Roca, one of the world's most distinguished sommeliers, and Inma Puig, a psychologist of acclaimed international repute, combine their expertise to publish "Tras las viñas", an enthralling tome featuring portraits of twelve of the world's most esteemed wineries. Among them, they showcase Pheasant's Tears, an exhilarating project whose wines impeccably mirror the remarkable wine heritage of Georgia. Established in 2005 by John Wurdeman and Gela Patalishvili in Sighnaghi, they produce exclusively natural wines, with minimal intervention and fermenting and aging the wines in qvevri, as has been done since 6000 BC.
Among their exquisite gems, Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli is an orange wine crafted from the indigenous Georgian grape variety rkatsiteli. Originating from Georgia, these grapes bear tiny pink speckles and grow in alluvial soil with limestone at an altitude of 400 meters, in the region of Kakheti. Following organic cultivation and manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed and macerated for one month with their skins. Subsequently, the vinification takes place in qvevri (amphoras buried in the earth) with indigenous yeasts, where the wine remains for 9 months before being bottled with 2 mg of sulfite.
With an exceedingly limited production that does not exceed 200 bottles, Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli is an orange wine that reflects a winemaking tradition stretching back thousands of years. For as Pliny the Elder once said, in wine lies the truth.
2019 | Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli 2019 is a nuanced orange wine exuding profound aromas of white fruit, hints of rose petals, and layered with spicy and honeyed nuances. On the palate, it is rich, dry, and untamed. This wine boasts a textured granularity, a pronounced acidity, and a tannic, bitter finish. |
