About Ornellaia Massetino
Super Tuscans are wines that emerged in the 1970s, when some Tuscan producers began experimenting with international grapes and modern winemaking methods. These productions were often more potent and richer than the region’s traditional wines, and some of them were considered revolutionary in their time. Highly valued for their quality and complexity, some of the most famous super Tuscans include Tignanello, Sassicaia and Ornellaia. The latter, created by the famous Tenuta dell'Ornellaia winery founded in 1981 by Marquis Ludovic Antinori near the village of Bolgheri in Tuscany, is now owned by Frescobaldi, one of the oldest and most prestigious families in the area, with a long history that has been involved in the wine industry since the 14th century.
Among the great wines they make, their smallest is; Ornellaia Massetino. A red wine made with Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes from the prestigious Masseto hill, from where its older brother Maseto (cult wine) is also born. The vines are planted in soil whose name Masseto comes from the hard blocks of blue clay (massi). They are cultivated using respectful agriculture. The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness and then each individual plot is vinified separately in the winery. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts in barrels and the wine is aged for a year in these same barrels until blending. Finally, it is put back into barrels for another 3 months before bottling.
Ornellaia Massetino’s older brother is a superstar of Tuscan wine, but this one has nothing to envy. An extremely generous and rich wine made in the DOC Bolgheri Superiore that follows in the footsteps of the wonderful Super Tuscans.
2020 | Ornellaia Massetino 2020 is a concentrated red wine that reveals notes of ripe red fruits accompanied by delicious hints of sweet spices, hints of tobacco and toasted touches. The palate is extremely generous, rich and deep. The product of a warm, sunny vintage, this is an opulent wine with body and structure, strong tannins and pleasant acidity. |
