About Niepoort LBV
Niepoort LBV is a Port wine coupage of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and Tinta Roriz. It is made by the Niepoort winery.
Niepoort is a Portuguese winery that was founded in 1842. It is currently run by Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation of the family it is named after. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery has vines in different locations, some of which are over 100 years old, and an aging cellar in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Niepoort LBV vines are over 70 years old and are planted mainly in shale soils. The planting density ranges from 4,000 to 6,000 plants per hectare. They are pruned using the Guyot and Cordón de Royat methods and harvested by hand.
Niepoort LBV ferments in open presses with traditional treading carried out to extract compounds, colour and aromas and to ensure it will be long-living. Once it has fermented to the desired level, wine alcohol is added and it is aged in large barrels for a minimum of 4 to 6 years. The level of residual sugars is approximately 100g / l.
Niepoort LBV is a wine with a mature and round character that can be enjoyed straight away but that also has good bottle-aging potential.
2014 | Niepoort LBV 2014 is a concentrated wine, with aromas of berries, spices and dark chocolate, with a subtle floral hue. It is an elegant and seductive wine, with good texture and good body. It has extremely soft tannins and a lively acidity that give it a long, firm and vinous finish. |
