About Niepoort Drink Me Nat Cool Copo Alegre 2021 1L

James Suckling of Wine Spectator once said “Niepoort is to vintage port what Krug is to champagne.” So when we are faced with a great company that dares to step out of its comfort zone and presents us with an innovative concept, we can’t resist. Dirk van der Niepoort, fifth generation of this Dutch family-owned company, not only perpetuates the company’s hands-off philosophy, but also introduces us to the funkier side of wine with “Nat Cool”. This is a very original project where several producers join forces to create light, fun and easy-to-drink wines using local varieties.

Niepoort Drink Me Nat Cool Copo Alegre is a red wine produced in the DOC Bairrada, in Beiras (Portugal), which aims to demonstrate the elegance and uniqueness of the native Baga variety. The grapes come from old vines with an average age of 60 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils and lying between 80 and 100 metres above sea level. They are cultivated in a respectful and traditional manner. The grapes are harvested by hand when they reach optimum ripeness and, once in the winery, the selected grapes are crushed in order to maximize extraction and enhance the tannin content of the fruit. Fermentation lasts about 5 weeks in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation and aging take place in these same containers for about 12 months. Finally, it is bottled unfiltered, reminiscent of the “cloudy” wines of the past.

The result is Niepoort Drink Me Nat Cool Copo Alegre, a cheerful wine full of freshness that under the fun gaze of one Portugal’s greats, shows us the versatility and personality of the Baga variety. A sweet and tannic grape at its funkiest.
