About Niepoort Colheita
Niepoort Colheita is a port wine coupage made with Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and other varieties. It is made by the Niepoort winery.
Niepoort is a Portuguese winery that was founded in 1842. It is currently run by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family it is named after. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery has vines in different locations, some of which are over 100 years old, and an aging cellar in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The Niepoort Colheita vines have an average age of over 60 years old. The plot soils are mainly shale and the strains are trained using the Guyot and Cordón de Royat methods. The grapes are harvested manually to keep them as in tact as possible.
Once in the winery, the Niepoort Colheita ferments in presses with typical Portuguese treading that helps to extract colour, aromas and structure from the grapes. Then when there is about one hundred grams per litre of residual sugars left in the must, it is topped up and aged in 550-litre pipes for at least 10 years.
Niepoort Colheita is a fresh, fruity port with an elegant and lingering finish.

On the palate, it is profound and balanced, with an unexpectedly refreshing acidity. A wine with velvety tannins that leaves a pleasant and lingering taste on the palate. Exquisite and captivating.
