About Niepoort 20 Years Old
Niepoort is a winery that was founded in 1842. It is currently run by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation of the family it is named after. They use traditional Portuguese techniques such as grape treading, fermentation in cement tanks or aging in pipes, 550-litre port-aging barrels, whilst also using new technologies that ensure the grapes are handled with care. The winery has vines in different locations, some of which are over 100 years old, and an aging cellar in the town of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The vines used to produce Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny have an average age of over 60 years old. They are planted in shale soils and trained using the Guyot and Cordón de Royat methods. The planting density of the plots is 4,000 to 6,000 plants per hectare and they are harvested by hand to fully respect the grapes and ensure they reach the winery without breaking.
Once in the winery, the Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny ferments in typical presses with traditional treading periodically carried out to extract the maximum colour, aromas and structure of the skins. Finally, before alcoholic fermentation finishes and there are just over 100 grams per litre of residual sugars left, wine alcohol is added and it begins to age in the typical 550-litre oak barrels for about 20 years.
Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny is a port wine with a long barrel aging process. A complex and balanced wine that goes perfectly with various cheeses, chocolate or desserts.
Niepoort 20 Years Old Tawny has a brick-brown red colour combined with orange tones. On the nose it displays fabulous aromas of crystallised fruit and dried apricots that also appear on the palate. On the finish, touches of hazelnuts combine perfectly with the alcohol level and sweetness. |
