About Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok
Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok is an organic, natural and biodynamic, barrel-aged white wine made by Sepp & Maria Muster in Weinland Österreich, Steiermark (Austria) with the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains variety.
Since Maria and Sepp Muster took over the family winery in Styria they have been working towards biodynamic certification. They have a total of 10 hectares of vineyards that have never been treated with herbicides or pesticides, which made certification easier to obtain. The vines are organically cultivated in rocky and silty soils, which results in well-structured, lively wines with a strong mineral character.
Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok comes from 20-year-old vines planted on steep slopes on the typical local “Opok” soil, a terroir composed of limestone and clay silt. Biodynamic agriculture is used, alongside organic and natural treatments and following the astronomical calendar. The yield is 4,000 kilograms per hectare and the grapes are harvested manually.
Once the Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok grapes have been selected and destemmed, they undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in 2,400-litre oval wooden barrels. After the first racking, of about 10 months, minimal sulphur is added. It then spends 20 months in 1,200 and 2,400 litre wooden barrels. It is finally bottled without being clarified, filtered or adding sulphites.
Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok is a great example of good biodynamic work. A fresh, lively and very energetic white wine that, as the producers say, lies between the sky and the earth.
2017 | Muster Gelber Muskateller vom Opok 2017 is a profiled white wine with expressive aromas of white fruit, citrus notes and hints of slate. On the palate it is fresh, dry and light. It reveals a delicious fruity flavour, with a bright acidity and a mineral background with light bitter touches. |
