About Montecillo Crianza

The quintessential Rioja, Montecillo Crianza, is a red blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha Tinta. This timeless classic wine, crafted by Montecillo wineries in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, has been given a breath of fresh air with a modern twist.

Montecillo Crianza hails from Rioja Alta, in the north of Spain, specifically from Fuenmayor, a town of 3,000 inhabitants located near the Ebro River. There, 145 years ago, Celestino Navajas Matute laid the foundations for Montecillo in 1870, making it the first winery in the town and the third oldest in La Rioja. Today, after failing to find a successor (Luis Navajas, the grandson of Celestino, had no children), the facilities were acquired by the Port-based group Osborne. This acquisition in 1973 was followed by enhancements and renovations, such as the construction of new production facilities in Navarrete.

Nowadays, Montecillo has become one of the prominent names featured on wine labels around the globe where, despite large-scale production, the quality, essence, and original purity are maintained. This is the case with Montecillo Crianza. After an initial controlled fermentation at a temperature of 24°C, Montecillo Crianza will spend two to three days cold-macerating in contact with its skins. From there, Montecillo Crianza will move to underground tanks, where malolactic fermentation takes place. The final touch is provided by the semi-new American oak barrels, where Montecillo Crianza undergoes oxidative aging for 18 months. Lastly, the months spent in the bottle are crucial for the proper maturation and development of Montecillo Crianza. The timeless Rioja with today's quality.
