About Mendall Alícia Santa Helena
Did you know that the inspiration for magnificent creations can emerge from the most unexpected locales? In the realm of wine, each vineyard narrates its own tale, and one such vineyard is christened after a place steeped in legend: Santa Helena. This singular vineyard, named by Laureano Serres Montagut, a trailblazer in the natural wine movement of Terra Alta (Catalonia), in homage to the remote British isle where Napoleon Bonaparte spent his final days, conjures the image of a secluded tract of land amidst the vast South Atlantic. Just as Napoleon was exiled to Santa Helena, this vineyard seems to stand aloof from the world, yet it harbors within its grapes an extraordinary potential. It is with this same vision that his daughter Alícia Serres introduces us to Mendall Alícia Santa Helena. A wine that encapsulates the unique essence of the vineyard, carrying with it the history and passion of a family devoted to the craft of natural wine in this region of Tarragona.
Alongside her partner Alex Fabregat, Alícia continues her father's legacy in staunchly championing the purest expression of the grape. In Mendall Alícia Santa Helena, a blend of Carignan, Red Grenache, and White Grenache, the aim is not only to reflect the intrinsic characteristics of the grape but also to reveal the qualities of a distinctive soil type, silty clay with limestone, situated at an elevation of 512 meters above sea level. The approach is 100% organic with biodynamic treatments, and the harvest is done manually at the optimal point of ripeness. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo maceration for 13 days and fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Finally, the wine is aged in these same vats for 4 months before bottling, without filtration, fining, or the addition of sulfites.
Just as Napoleon capitulated at the Battle of Waterloo and was exiled to Santa Helena, we surrender to the enchantment of Mendall Alícia Santa Helena. An odyssey through time and space, a testament to the creativity and love for the land that epitomize the Serres Montagut family, where the vigor of Terra Alta is fearlessly exhibited.
