About Mendall Alícia Cendra Rosa
If there is something invaluable in a teacher, it is their ability to inspire and impart their legacy to the forthcoming generations. Laureano Serres Montagut, an acclaimed pioneer of minimal intervention, embodies this principle with his daughter Alicia Serres and son-in-law Alex Fabregat, as he entrusts them to render their own interpretation within the vineyards they own in El Pinell de Brai, situated in Terra Alta (Catalonia). These plots, sprawling across the region, form the essence of the winery Mendall, christened in homage to Laureano's maternal household. Herein, following in his footsteps, Alicia and Alex craft natural wines that, through artisanal methods, strive to encapsulate the grape's most unadulterated essence and the character of the terroir.
This is exemplified in Mendall Alícia Cendra Rosa, a red wine whose nomenclature stems from a playful twist on the precise name of the plot, known as Cendrosa. A single-varietal of garnacha tinta originating from 18-year-old vines planted in loamy-clay soil with limestone components at an elevation of 350 meters. Endeavoring to preserve the grape's purest state, the cultivation follows organic practices and biodynamic treatments in harmony with nature. The harvest is meticulously handpicked at the peak of ripeness and, upon arrival at the winery, the selected grapes undergo maceration for two weeks and spontaneously ferment with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Ultimately, the wine is aged in these same vats over a period of 4 months and is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and without the addition of sulfites.
With Mendall Alícia Cendra Rosa, the adage "like father, like daughter" becomes an inescapable truth. This red wine, born from the collaborative efforts of Alicia Serres and Alex Fabregat, personifies the commitment, passion, and excellence bequeathed by Laureano Serres Montagut.
