About Matassa Tattouine
There are individuals who endear themselves to others... and Tom Lubbe is one such person. A New Zealander by birth, raised in South Africa, naturally inquisitive, a wine rebel and a farmer by vocation. He landed in Roussillon (southern France) to learn from one of the greats, Gérard Gauby, and ended up gaining more than just knowledge: he fell in love with the place, the work... and the master's daughter, Nathalie.
Today, Tom and Nathalie craft wines that seem out of this world from their estate Matassa, in the commune of Calce, in Roussillon. One of the most exceptional is named Tattouine, after the southern Tunisian city that inspired Star Wars... and, above all, as a tribute to the Tunisian workers who planted these vineyards over a century ago.
Matassa Tattouine Rouge originates from a tiny 0.8-hectare plot, surrounded by garrigue and with soils of red schist and limestone. The vines, over 100 years old, are cultivated as bush vines with biodynamic treatments. Here, no herbicides or systemic products are used; only natural compost, cover crops, and minimal tillage. The objective is clear: to keep the soil alive and the ecosystem in balance.
The harvest is done by hand, with selection in the vineyard and whole bunches arriving intact at the winery. There, they are vinified without destemming, with a gentle 3-week maceration that extracts just enough to preserve freshness and tension. Fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts, without artificial temperature control. Afterwards, the wine is aged for 9 months in concrete tanks, without fining or filtering. Only a minimal touch of sulphur is added if necessary before bottling.
The result? Matassa Tattouine. A burst of crunchy fruit, with energy, freshness, and a concentration that makes the mouth water. A red that is almost effortlessly drinkable... but unforgettable.
