About Mas Coutelou Mourvèdre

Although the Phoenicians didn’t create wine, they were very important in expanding wine culture. In their commercial travels they were accompanied by some varieties that ended up on the other side of the world, such as the Mourvèdre (known as Monastrell), which reached Sagunto in 500 BC. At that time the city was known as Morvedre, and this is probably the origin of the name of this red wine variety, typical of warm climates, which from there spread to other places such as Australia (today an essential part of the country's production), California and France (in Provence). Here, in the Languedoc region, where it has become the true star, Jeff Coutelou has picked it and made it the focus of his Mas Coutelou Mourvèdre wine, an organic single-varietal red wine, made and aged in cement tanks.

To meet Jeff Coutelou you have to go to southeastern France, specifically to the village of Pumisson, where this winegrower cultivates 13 hectares of completely organic vineyards. In fact, this is where Coutelou's true value lies, as he was the first in the area to achieve organic certification in 1987. At the time, no one cared about issues such as the environment or sustainability, but he saw the way forward (which was later taken up by the majority). In this way, the clay-limestone soils and vines (where up to 13 different varieties are grown) have been free of contamination and chemical products for more than 30 years. The Mediterranean climate adds the finishing touch to this full-bodied, alcoholic grape, which needs high temperatures and many hours of sunshine to ripen. All this is achieved thanks to the dry and hot summers which are balanced with the mildness of winter (also sunny), autumn and spring. Low rainfall and cold north winds ensure good grape health.

This variety reaches its maximum expression in Mas Coutelou Mourvèdre. The winemaking process is based on two main principles: maceration (two weeks) and spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks (where the wine will be aged for one year after pressing). After all, this is a pure Mourvèdre which is bottled without filtering or clarifying. A real pleasure for the palate.
