About Mas Coutelou L’Oublié Version
Nowadays, thinking green isn’t something just a few people do. Today, a sustainable approach to our food and lifestyle is an exemplary way forward. In 1987, however, no one was talking about the allergies caused by sulphites or the worldwide environmental devastation. In the 1980s, you had to be very brave to be designate yourself organic and convert 20 hectares of conventional farmland, even if this meant sacrificing about 7 hectares of cropland. And that’s exactly what Jean François Coutelou did, a winegrower who, although he may not have been understood in the beginning, is now considered one of the most dedicated winegrowers in France.
The varieties Jeff grows are all from the south of France, and on his estate located in Puimuisson (a few kilometers from Beziers), the vines coexist with thousands of fruit trees to promote biodiversity. From this base, each vintage offers a range of unique cuvées. Wines he invents at any time following his intuition and that only go onto the market when he considers them representative of the character of the place. Specifically, Mas Coutelou L'Oublié Version is a wine made from Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault vines. These grapes are grown without chemical products and harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripening. Then, in the winery, they’re vinified through fermentation with native yeasts and the resulting wine is blended with several old vintages aged in 600-liter old semi-muddled tanks. Every year, a certain amount of the old wine is extracted from the solera and added to the blend for the new wine, while the solera is refilled with the new wine.
The result is Mas Coutelou L'Oublié Version, an exceptional cuvée where the youth of the vintage blends with the maturity of the solera. We guarantee that when you taste this wine, you won’t end up in oblivion.
