A classic among natural classics. The best known from Más Coutelou. A benchmark in the organic world. This presentation whets your appetite for Mas Coutelou Le Vin des Amis, the best known and most talked-about wine from French winemaker Jeff Coutelou, one of the first wineries to achieve organic certification.
There’s little more to add about this red wine made from Cinsault, Syrah and Garnacha tinta in the small cellar or garage owned by Jeff Coutelou in Pumisson, a small Languedoc village located a few minutes from Béziers (France).
Specifically, Jeff Coutelou, considered a cult figure in the area, is the fourth generation of a family which has historically been dedicated to looking after the vineyards in this area, where a Mediterranean climate prevails. Prior to 1987 (when it was still dedicated to conventional farming), the property had about 20 hectares, which over time has been reduced to 13 hectares. All this land has been replanted with olive trees, shrubs and hedges to promote biodiversity. The vineyards, which are worked manually, are divided into separate plots where native varieties are planted. The soils are mostly calcareous-clayey, with gravel and loam seams.
At harvest time, each plot is harvested and vinified separately. Mas Coutelou Le Vin des Amis ferments spontaneously in concrete tanks. Once fermented, each wine is transferred to cement and fiberglass tanks for aging. After this time, Mas Coutelou Le Vin des Amis wines are blended, allowing each of the cuvées to express itself. Finally, it’s bottled without filtering or clarifying.
"In nature, brothers and sisters can be very different creatures, even if you have the same parents and receive the same education. The same goes for the wines of the domain," says Jeff Coutelou. According to his advice, it’s up to each person to find the ideal moment to discover each wine individually. For you, what would be the ideal way to explore Mas Coutelou Le Vin des Amis?
