About Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha
In moderation lies virtue. This is well understood at the Casa Los Frailes winery, located in the Vals dels Alforins region (within the D.O. Valencia), where they have achieved the perfect balance with Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha, a red wine in which both grape varieties—despite their distinct profiles—harmonise superbly.
Regarding the monastrell, this winery lacks no experience, as it has traditionally been the most cultivated variety. Since its establishment in 1771, when an ancestor of the Vázquez family purchased the estate at a public auction after it was expropriated from the jesuits by Charles III, the Velázquez family has cultivated it with great expertise. Now, it is the turn of María José and Miguel Velázquez, the 13th generation currently leading this enterprise, which owns 130 hectares of vineyards averaging 25 years of age (70% of which are planted with monastrell across various plots at an altitude of 650 metres). Meanwhile, the garnacha comes directly from the La Casa de aperos plot. The significant difference between the two stems directly from the soil: while the monastrell thrives in deep, silty-sandy alluvial soils, the garnacha grows in rubefied calcareous soils, prone to erosion and rich in iron. Both vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 2019, making it one of the pioneering Spanish wineries in adopting such cultivation methods.
After the grapes reach optimal ripeness, the clusters are hand-harvested separately. Generally, both varieties follow distinct paths during the vinification of Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha, where the primary aim is minimal intervention. Thus, each grape arrives at the winery separately and is destemmed. From there, Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha proceeds directly to stainless steel tanks for fermentation at a controlled temperature. Once transformed into wine, Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha undergoes maceration for 14 days (in the case of the garnacha) and 18 days (for the monastrell). Upon completion, each batch follows a different path: concrete tanks for the monastrell and 225-litre French oak barrels for the garnacha. In both vessels, the ageing period does not exceed 5-6 months. However, the true magic of Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha lies in the fact that it has been crafted in the same wine presses built by the jesuits in the 15th century, which are still preserved today.
Although this is the minimum time required by the winery, Los Frailes Monastrell-Garnacha has much more life ahead, as its excellent ageing potential places it between 5 and 10 years in optimal conditions.
