About L'Anit de Frisach
L'Anit de Frisach is a single-varietal Garnacha, an organic, natural, and vegan wine crafted at Celler Frisach by Joan and Francesc Ferré, two brothers who have been at the helm of this winery in Catalonia, within the D.O. Terra Alta since 2009.
The origins of this winery trace back 200 years, with the ancestors of this duo residing in Corbera d'Ebre, a village in Tarragona (northwest Spain), traditionally devoted to viticulture. Known as the inhabitants of Casa Frisach, the siblings delved into the municipal archives to discover that the Frisach surname dates back to 1692. Today, they are the custodians—almost serendipitously—of a legacy and a passion.
Although the Ferré brothers were raised among the vines, it wasn't until 2005 that they took charge of their first production. Traditionally, the family focused solely on cultivating grapes in vineyards nestled between the Ebro River and the Aragon border. The harvest was then sold to more prominent producers; however, that year one of the industry titans withdrew in September, leaving the family with only two viable options: either sell the grapes to another producer (at a bargain price), or create their own wine. "If we had top-quality grapes, why couldn't we do it ourselves? We've always been self-reliant," asserts Francesc.
It seems it could be no other way for this family. "My mother is from Batea and was a teacher. My father is from Corbera and was a driving instructor. Two warriors, thanks to them we're not criminals. Others might have preferred 14 paychecks, but they decided to abandon everything to start an agricultural project, a true rarity. With vineyards, it's well known, it takes three or four years before you can reap profits," Francesc explained in an interview with the newspaper Ara.
Ultimately, they have managed to secure a spot on the wine lists and in the cellars of top-tier restaurants with their natural wines. One of these is L'Anit de Frisach, produced in concrete vats and subjected to a brief maceration. No aging or treatment involved. L'Anit de Frisach is bottled directly, unfiltered, unstabilized, and unclarified. A wine that speaks as these two brothers do: loudly and clearly. As they present it: the wildest expression of the D.O. Terra Alta.
