Justinos Boal 10 Years is a fortified wine made by the Portuguese winery Justino’s Madeira with the Boal variety in the DOP Madeira.
Justino’s Madeira was founded in 1870 by Justino Henrique Freitas in Madeira to produce wines on the island. In 1993, the company became part of one of the largest French wine and spirit production and distribution groups: C.O.F.E.E.P, also known as La Martiniquaise. It is currently one of the oldest wine producing and exporting companies on the island with one of the largest stocks of aged Madeira wine.
Justinos Boal 10 Years comes from vineyards planted on small terraces called poios, on volcanic soils with basalt, traces, tuff, slag and agglomerates. With the island’s landscape, it is almost impossible to use machinery, so traditional and manual agriculture is used instead.
The Justinos Boal 10 Years grapes are taken to the winery to be destemmed, crushed and pressed. The must ferments in stainless steel tanks with at a controlled temperature and with reassembly. Fermentation is stopped after 4 or 5 days by adding a 96% grape spirit. Finally, it is left to age using the traditional Canteiro system in different sized French and American oak barrels for 10 years.
Justinos Boal 10 Years is a product of Madeira island’s traditional Canteiro system. A very special fortified wine that has been praised all over the world for its great complexity.
