About Julien Meyer Les Pierres Chaudes
In an era when the Church and the majority of scientists believed that Earth was the centre of the universe, Galileo Galilei staunchly championed the heliocentric theory. It was not easy to go against the tide, but despite suffering for his ideas, over time his vision was accepted, and today he is recognised as a pioneer of science. A similar phenomenon occurred in the world of wine with Patrick Meyer and his wife Mireille, the great pioneers of natural wine in Alsace. When they began crafting their wines under the principles of minimal intervention, exploring techniques such as ageing under flor, macerations, and extended ageing, it's likely more than one colleague considered them mad. However, the results spoke for themselves, and eventually, they managed to silence many critics.
Leading Domaine Julien Meyer, this pair of winemakers have been cultivating their 8 hectares for over 30 years, initially under the principles of organic farming and later biodynamics. Located in Nothalten, halfway between Strasbourg and Colmar, the winery is the source of some of the region's most complex and expressive wines.
One of our favourites is Julien Meyer Les Pierres Chaudes, a balanced pinot noir from a single vineyard. Crafted with a biodynamic approach, following a manual harvest, the grapes undergo meticulous selection and are gently crushed before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures on fine lees for several months before its final racking.
Free, natural, and with an unmistakable personality, Julien Meyer Les Pierres Chaudes embodies the vision and mastery of Patrick and Mireille. For great pioneers are always one step, or two, ahead.
