About I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Il Vino dei Vigneri

Managed by Salvo Foti, I Vigneri could be described as more of a family than a company. This winery came out of an association of winemakers created in 1435 under the name “Maestranza dei Vigneri”, set up to protect viticulture around the Etna area in Sicily, which Foti keeps alive today through cultivating in harmony with nature, using non-invasive tools and techniques and respecting traditions and old vines. But if I Vigneri is known for one thing, it is for the bond between the people and the land. So much so that, instead of hiring day workers for peak periods, the staff at I Vigneri work all year round to guarantee the economic stability of all families involved. So, when the vineyards need less care, their work focuses on the maintenance and improvement of the land with the construction of traditional dry stone walls in the vineyards, the repositioning of roads and the reordering of the environment.

In the winery, Salvo Forti, revives the original viticulture of the slopes of Etna from a modern point of view but without forgetting the tradition and without damaging the territory. I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Il Vino dei Vigneri is a red wine made from the native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio varieties that grow under the influence of the Etna volcano. These vines are 20 years old on average and cultivated using organic agriculture. The grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum point of ripeness. In the winery, the grapes are pressed with feet and without destemming and then macerated with the skins and stems for 8 days. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts and without controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged in terracotta amphorae for 6 months without racking. Finally, it is bottled following the phases of the moon and with a minimal amount of sulphur.

I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Il Vino dei Vigneri is the wine from the DOC Etna Rosso that best embodies Salvo’s winemaking philosophy. The result of his efforts to give new life to the ancient traditional of Etna winemaking, which is now almost extinct.

I Vigneri di Salvo Foti Il Vino dei Vigneri 2020 is a concentrated red wine with delicious aromas of ripe red and black fruit, violet notes and hints of spice. On the palate it is complex, unctuous and well structured. A medium to full-bodied wine with elegant tannins and fine grip. The finish is long, flavoursome and persistent.
