About Guímaro
Guímaro is a young red wine from Ribeira Sacra prepared by Adega Guímaro. This is a single variety of Mencia.
The grapes used for this wine comes from vineyards treated completely by hand planted on spectacular steep terraces in Amandi, one of the five sub-areas that divides the Ribeira Sacra. Wine has been produced in this region for more than 2,000 years. In fact, it was the Romans who began working on these steep slopes.
The wines of this area, of low production but high quality, were praised even by the New York Times in 2009.
Adega Guímaro was built early in the century and the wines are produced in the traditional way. In 1991 a major reform did improve their conditions and the winery is now one of the flagship wineries of the Ribeira Sacra.
Adega Guímaro also has planned to launch organic wines made from native Galician varieties.
