About Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino
Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino is a monovarietal Sangiovese Grosso red wine produced by Fonterenza. It is a biodynamic red wine covered by DOCG Brunello di Montalcino.
Fonterenza is a young winery created and directed by two twin sisters from Milan. They planted their first vineyard in 1999 and cultivate all their plots biodynamically. They produce natural wines governed by the principles of minimum intervention in the winery.
The grapes for Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino come from a 1.6 hectare plot with clay and shale soil and an approximate plantation density of 4,000 plants per hectare. The vines were planted in 1999 and are trained in the bilateral Guyot style. Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino is produced with one hectare of this vineyard, with the remainder being devoted to another wine.
Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino ferments in 1,750 litre Slovenian oak foudres with native yeasts at a maximum temperature of 30ºC for 20 days. In total it macerates with the skins for 30 to 90 days. Lastly, it is aged in 2,000 and 2,300 litre barrels for 47 months. The final wine is not filtered or clarified before bottling. Only some 5,000 bottles are produced.
Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine with a dense colour and aromas of black berries accompanied by touches of leather. On the palate it is wild and fresh. A pure expression of the Sangiovese.
