About Fabio Coullet Orange Peels
The grape variety Muscat of Alexandria boasts a storied past that dates back thousands of years. As its name suggests, its origins imply a connection to the ancient Egyptian port city of Alexandria. Esteemed throughout history for its ability to yield wines with distinct and enticing aromas and flavors, it has been utilized in the crafting of both sweet and dry wines. Moreover, its adaptability to diverse climates and resilience against various diseases have made it a popular choice for wine production in several wine-growing regions around the globe, including South America, Australia, and, of course, the Mediterranean, where it has become a signature grape. In the district of Axarquía, a region located in the province of Málaga in southern Spain, known for its striking mountainous landscape cascading down to the Mediterranean Sea coast, is where the vintner Fabio Coullet has expertly captured the essence of this variety. A unique landscape within the Sierras de Málaga designation of origin that, with his project, is generating considerable buzz. Adhering to a philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum emphasis on local varieties, he presents a collection of natural wines that are truly exquisite.
A signature creation is the Fabio Coullet Orange Peels, an orange wine crafted from the flagship variety Muscat of Alexandria, grown on decomposed slate soils. These are old vines planted on steep slopes of up to 70% incline, which require heroic viticulture (where the geographical conditions are so challenging that vineyard work necessitates a heroic effort from the vintners, exclusively by hand). Even without certification, sustainable and organic farming practices are nonetheless employed, and the harvest is manually done in 11-kilogram boxes. Once in the winery, following ancient techniques that have been revived by orange wine, the grapes macerate with their skins at a controlled temperature. They are then pressed, and the resulting must is left to rest in clay amphorae with its lees for 12 months.
Fabio Coullet Orange Peels is much more than a wine. It is an ode to heroic viticulture and the historical richness of the Muscat of Alexandria grape. It is undoubtedly the perfect amalgamation of tradition and innovation. Why wait to taste it?
2021 | Fabio Coullet Orange Peels 2021 is a well-defined orange wine that captivates from the first sip with its vibrant freshness and a well-balanced acidity that arouses the senses. The tannins, subtly present, remind us of its skin-contact process, providing structure. Citrus notes of grapefruit and the comforting essence of toasted orange peel intertwine in an aromatic ballet. A generous vintage that unfolds with freshness and breadth, enveloping the palate with its unique charm and expansive character. |
