About Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos de Valtuille Vino de Villa

Just as the surrealist painter Remedios Varo, the writer Octavio Paz, or the filmmaker Luis Buñuel, the writer and thinker Antonio Estévez emigrated to Mexico during the Civil War to escape Francoist persecution. Yet, even though Estévez settled across the Atlantic in 1942, he always harbored dreams of returning to his homeland, to Valtuille de Abajo in Castile and León, Spain. Today, his family is reviving a century-old legacy in this quaint village of the Bierzo region, where they have preserved vineyards owned and tended to by generations. In tribute to their grandfather and the familial heritage, they craft wines as if they were genuine verses, imbued with layers of meaning and emotion.

Evidence of this remarkable endeavor is found in Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Vino de Villa, a classic blend of mencía with small percentages of other red and white varieties sourced from various locations. Ancient vines, 90 years old, are planted in clay and sandy soils at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level and are cultivated according to traditional practices. At the winery, all grapes undergo fermentation with 15% whole cluster and native yeasts in 7,500-liter French oak foudres. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 225 and 500-liter oak barrels, where it remains for 12 months before bottling.

Like the artists and thinkers who found sanctuary in foreign lands during tumultuous times, the Estévez family has transformed their exile into a homage to their roots. Estévez Bodegas y Viñedos Versos Vino de Villa stands as a living testament, reminding us that even from afar, we can always find a piece of home in a glass of wine.
