About Hermanos Hernáiz El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto

Hermanos Hernáiz El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto is a Viñedo Singular red wine coupage of the Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Maturana Tinta varieties made by Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz-Finca La Emperatriz under the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Spain.

Until the end of 2019, the range of wines under the “Finca La Emperatriz” label included nine wines made with grapes from different vineyards of the same name, and when the grapes from a harvest ran out, the wine was no longer available. This has been replaced by a new selection where Hermanos Hernáiz El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto now occupies the place of Finca la Emperatriz Parcela No. 1 and Finca La Emperatriz Garnacha Cepas Viejas that are no longer produced.

From 2019, the D.O.Ca. Rioja established a new geographical indication classification system that seeks to value the terroir as a recognition of the quality it brings to the wine. This means there are three new classifications: Viñedo Singular, Vinos de Municipio and Vinos de Zona.

Finca La Emperatriz has the Viñedo Singular certification, which is given to small, old plots with limited but high quality production and which, in summary, must comply with a series of strict standards to prove their quality. This is the highest of the three certifications.

The grapes used to make Hermanos Hernáiz El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto come from plots where the soils are mostly composed of white boulders over a sandy-loam structure and where the vines have an average age of 25 years old.

The Tempranillo and Viura (Macabeo) varieties are vatted at the same time in stainless steel tanks and, as of 2017, they have used native yeasts in half of the tanks for alcoholic fermentation. The resulting wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in combined stainless steel and concrete tanks. Finally Hermanos Hernáiz El Jardín de la Emperatriz Tinto ages for 12 months in barrels, 70% of which are American oak and 30% of which are French oak.

Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz is the new project of brothers Eduardo and Víctor, who in 1996 acquired Bodega La Emperatriz, named as such because the first owner of these plots was Eugenia de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III and Empress of France. With this new emphasis and with new projects at hand, the winery changed its name but its high-end wines retain the Finca La Emperatriz signature, the name of the ‘viñedo singular’ they come from.
