Getting out of your comfort zone is a challenge. Knowing that what you do will give you good results always works, but devoting time, work and resources to something when you don't know how it will turn out is a risk that not many people want to take. In the case of El Grifo, the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the most remote in Spain, it dedicates a line of wines to experimentation and, under the name Experiencia de vendimia (Vintage Experience), it stores real gems from Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands (Spain). These are limited editions from specific places that are made using new methods, many of which have fallen into disuse and which the El Grifo team has dedicated itself to recovering. One of these wines in the collection is El Grifo Listán Negro Grano a Grano, a wine that is quite a challenge in an appellation that is well known for its white wines and where reds have been left in the background.

Grifo Listán Negro Grano a Grano comes from a plot in the Tomaren estate, located in the centre of the island of Lanzarote. A place with centenary listán negro plants rooted in volcanic sand soil. The grapes are harvested in the traditional way, but leverages the most modern techniques to harvest the grapes at the optimum moment of ripeness. They are transported in small boxes to the cellar to avoid damaging the berries. Once inside, half of the bunches are destemmed by hand and the rest are left with their stems, imitating past production methods. The grapes are crushed to break the berries and left to macerate for 2 hours with the skins. The must is then fermented with native yeasts in 700-litre stainless steel tanks and racked to another stainless steel tank for malolactic fermentation. Finally it is bottled without fining and is not released for sale until 3 months later.

With minimal intervention and maximum respect for local tradition, El Grifo Listán Negro Grano a Grano is an appeal to the origins of Lanzarote. A young, fresh and casual wine that has been a challenge for the El Grifo team which they can feel very proud of.

El Grifo Listán Negro Grano a Grano 2021 is an irresistible red wine that captivates with its juicy aromas of red fruits, accompanied by a high floral intensity and herbal nuances, which add a touch of freshness. On the palate, it is fresh and perfectly balanced. A fluid wine, with a long and persistent finish, notable for its good acidity and extremely pleasant aftertaste.

Grifo Listán Negro Grano a Grano 2022 is a juicy red wine with aromas of red fruit, herbaceous notes and floral hints. On the palate it is fresh, long and balanced. A smooth wine with good acidity, pronounced tannins and a very pleasant finish. Edition limited to 4191 bottles.
