About Gran Enemigo Gualtallary

Alejandro Vigil shares a birthday with Che Guevara, which is why he has a “typical” revolutionary streak and is not afraid to challenge the limits of viticulture and enology. This tireless winemaker is known as “the Messi of wine”. He was the first to achieve the highly sought after 100 Parker points for Argentina.

Although it could be said that it was actually 200 Parker points. In 2018, for the first time ever, two Argentine wines made by Alejandro Vigil, achieved it: 100 Parker points for Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Stones 2016, a wine from the Catena Zapata winery, where Vigil works as director of winemaking; and 100 Parker points for Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2013, made at Alejandro’s own project, Bodega Aleanna (The Enemy), which he runs in partnership with Adrianna Catena, the youngest daughter of Nicolás Catena Zapata.

With this background, Gran Enemigo Gualtallary has become a flagship wine, especially for Adrianna and Alejandro, and for Argentine viticulture. This red wine starts life at an altitude of 1,470 metres above sea level, in a high density vineyard planted in Gualtallary (Mendoza), surrounded by a stunning landscape. It is made from a coupage of Cabernet Franc (in greater proportion) and Malbec varieties, with the vines growing in calcareous soils that are very similar to those you would find in Burgundy or Champagne.

The grapes are harvested at five different times, with a period of one and a half months between the first and the last harvest. When the grapes reach the winery, they undergo a cold maceration (5 days) and maceration at medium temperature for 23 days, with 30% of the clusters whole. Fermentation is carried out in barrels at medium temperature. The resulting wine is aged for 5 months in 100-year-old foudres.

Gran Enemigo Gualtallary is a limited production wine, it is precise, with transgressive elegance and it is vibrant and fresh, which breaks with the guidelines established by classic viticulture and manages to place Argentina’s wines among the best.
