About Château Lynch-Bages Echo de Lynch-Bages
Echo was a nymph. From their mouths came the most beautiful words ever uttered. This same gift is the one that entertained the goddess Hera, wife of Zeus, while her unfaithful husband courted the other nymphs. When she discovered the deception, Hera punished Echo by taking away her voice, condemning her to only be able to repeat the words of others. So, she remained in silence for eternity, dodging any encounter or conversation. And that is exactly how speechless you will be when you open a bottle of Château Lynch-Bages Echo de Lynch-Bages, a red wine produced by the Château Lynch-Bages winery in the A.O.C. Pauillac, in the Médoc region of Bordeaux (southwest France).
Château Lynch-Bages Echo, formerly known as Château Haut-Bages Averous, is the second wine from this iconic winery, with centuries of history, currently owned by Jean Michel Cazes. Located in the Batges area, at the gateway to Pauillac, Château Lynch-Bages sits on a unique, high-quality site on the banks of the estuary, on well-drained gravel soils with limestone beds. There lie 100 hectares of vineyards, aged between 30 and 60 years old, growing red varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot) and white varieties like Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. In this area, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde, the climate is mild, warm and humid, with many hours of sunshine per year. In general, this microclimate is extremely beneficial for the grapes, which are protected from spring frosts.
A total of 35 people, under the leadership of Nicolas Labenne, monitor the vineyard on a daily basis. All hectares are divided into plots (determined by the soil), using the most advanced technology. This has helped them protect the estate’s genetic heritage, preserving and enhancing the terroir. However, this does not detract from the importance of the human influence, which is essential when it comes to the harvesting and vinification of Château Lynch-Bages Echo.
The Château Lynch-Bages Echo grapes arrive at the winery and, after sorting, they are vatted for fermentation (each variety separately). Once this process has finished, Château Lynch-Bages Echo spends some time in contact with its skins. Following this maceration, Château Lynch-Bages Echo is devatted and the wine without skins is transferred to vats and barrels where it undergoes malolactic fermentation.
This step is essential ahead of assembly, another major operation where the percentage of each variety will vary from year to year. This blend will be decided by a committee of experts, led by Jean-Charles Cazes and the technical team of Daniel Llose, Nicolas Labenne and Jérôme Le Roux, who will reach a consensus on the perfect coupage for each vintage. After working hard, it is then time for Château Lynch-Bages Echo to rest and refine in oak barrels until it becomes a spectacle that will leave you speechless.
