Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Chardonnay

White wine Biodynamic.
About Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Chardonnay
In the 1930s Chênove, Marsannay and Couchey were three municipalities that decided not to join the growing fashion for denominations. While their neighbours jumped on the bandwagon, allowing the village name to be put on their bottles, these three municipalities remained on the outside. Just a little time passed, and showed that they had obviously been wrong. How could these vineyards (the second largest in area after Gevrey-Chambertin) be left out of all denominations? Rather than being discouraging, this setback was not the end and after several years, finally, in 1987, the A.O.C. Marsannay appeared. This is where Philippe Charlopin makes Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Chardonnay.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, Chardonnay has been the grape grown in this northern region of the Côte de Nuits. Before this, the question of variety did not matter. Joseph-Clair-Dü was the visionary winemaker who stressed the importance of growing this white variety again. It is purely thanks to him that the A.O.C. Marsannay has become what it is today. Although Philippe Charlopin is not a native of this region (he was born in Gevrey-Chambertin), this winemaker could not miss out on all that they achieve in this area, which is considered the Golden Gateway to the Côte de Nuit where there is a great variety of soils. Limestones, marls, clay and pebbles are all there together. This is the common base for all the denomination’s wines. The key and determining factor comes from the altitude, slope and position of each of the vineyards.
All these nuances will be carefully considered in Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Chardonnay, where Philippe Charlopin is committed to biodynamic cultivation, with manual processes and a respect for the environment. Nothing should interfere with the growth of the vineyards. In fact, to be more precise, Philippe Charlopin, assisted by his son Yann only intervenes on two occasions: the first in the vineyard, where the yields of each vine are controlled; the second in the winery, where Philippe will choose both the blend and the type of barrel to be used to age Charlopin-Parizot Marsannay Chardonnay. The latter is a very important factor because depending on their origin (whether they are old or first-use barrels), the wine will gain very different characteristics. In this sense, Philippe is a master, because his creations combine both materials. A revelation not to be missed!
