About De Muller Chardonnay
As Don Quixote said to Sancho Panza: "We have come across the church". The history of De Muller, a winery founded in Reus (Tarragona) in 1851 by the Alsatians Augusto De Müller and Ruinart de Brimont, began in an unexpected manner. After the devastating phylloxera plague in their homeland, they decided to relocate to Tarragona (Catalonia) in search of land free from the pest. Little did they imagine that, over time, they would become the first winery in the world to receive the title of "Pontifical Suppliers to the Holy See". Although their primary aim was exportation, it was their close relationship with the Church that allowed them to create a communion wine that quickly became a benchmark among the upper echelons of Catholicism. Today, that relationship endures, and De Muller communion wine continues to reach churches across half the world.
Nevertheless, De Muller has not only capitalised on this connection with the Church. It has also demonstrated its prowess in crafting high-quality wines within the D.O. Tarragona. A prime example is the De Muller Chardonnay, a white wine with a distinct Mediterranean character. Produced from chardonnay grapes, the harvest is conducted manually to ensure the grapes reach their optimal ripeness.
The vinification of De Muller Chardonnay takes place in French, American, Hungarian, Russian, Romanian, Slovak, and German oak barrels, for 24 days at a controlled temperature between 14 and 16 ºC. After fermentation, the wine undergoes a brief ageing on lees with battonage, which imparts a creamy texture and greater complexity on the palate.
De Muller remains a respected name with over 170 years of winemaking tradition. Their De Muller Chardonnay is a wine that reflects both the legacy of the winery and its commitment to quality. And, much like the ingenious gentleman from La Mancha, De Muller has managed to remain true to its spirit, evolving and conquering new horizons, without ever losing sight of its roots.
