About Curral Teles Alfa Tinto

You have probably never heard of “human wines”. A concept that Mateus Nicolau de Almeida, 5th generation of one of the most recognised families in the world of Port wine, uses to identify wines where there is a notable human intervention in their final state. Wines that obviously have an emotional connection to the winemaker and are the result of his effort, passion and knowledge. These products have a distinctive quality and reflect the identity, character and values of the people involved in their creation.

He makes these wines with his wife Teresa Ameztoy under the name Curral Teles, and they are each classified with a letter of the Greek alphabet in honour of the experiments that were carried out in the Greek academies. One of them is Curral Teles Alfa Tinto, a wine made in the DOC Douro, which Mateos himself defines as “Vinho Vermelho” because it is made just like the Roman and Cistercian monks used to make it in the past. It is made using grapes of the native Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Amarela varieties from old organic vines that are crushed whole for 3 hours in a granite vessel called a Calcatórium. It is then pressed in a vertical press and the resulting must is fermented and aged for 8 months in a cement vat.

Curral Teles Alfa Tinto is a coupage made in small quantities and only in specific years that highlights the influence of the soil of the Douro Valley and, above all, of each of the decisions made by human beings with maximum involvement.

2019

Curral Teles Alfa Tinto 2019 is a smooth red wine with intense aromas of red fruit, floral notes and spicy hints. On the palate it is broad, juicy and fresh. A wine with refreshing acidity, ripe, fine tannins and a fresh, mineral finish.
