About Contrada Zisola Catarratto Terre Siciliane

Stepping out of one's comfort zone is never easy, yet it often yields substantial rewards. The Mazzei family, with over 25 generations devoted to winemaking in Tuscany, understands this well. In 2003, they took a bold leap to Sicily, specifically to Noto. This city, renowned for its Baroque architecture and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offered the Mazzei family immense potential. Its history, culture, climate, and unique soils provided the ideal setting for a new chapter beyond their usual terrain. Thus, their project at the finca Zisola was born, with a clear aim to highlight the value of indigenous Sicilian grape varieties.

One of the most intriguing outcomes of this venture is Contrada Zisola Catarratto Terre Siciliane, a white wine crafted entirely from catarratto, a grape deeply rooted in Sicily for centuries. These old vines, traditionally cultivated, thrive on medium-textured soils rich in limestone, which enhances the wine's freshness and structure. Its vinification is key to understanding its character. On one hand, 50% of the wine ferments with the skins in cocciopesto (a type of amphora made from natural materials) for three months, imparting structure and complexity, while the other 50% is traditionally vinified in stainless steel tanks, preserving the grape's freshness and aromatic expression.

The result is Contrada Zisola Catarratto Terre Siciliane, a fresh, vertical, and complex wine with excellent ageing potential, embodying the balance between innovation and respect for local tradition. A white wine with character that demonstrates the value of looking beyond the familiar.
