About Cigliuti Vie Erte Barbaresco
Cru is a concept linked to the French notion of terroir and translates as ‘growth’, referring to a large or superior growing area or vineyard. But in reality they are designated areas for the production of high quality wines thanks to the specific characteristics of the soil, exposure and microclimate. Vie Erte is one of the crus owned by Cigliuti, a family of winegrowers who have been cultivating vines in the Langhe (in Piedmont) for four generations and is run by Renato Cigliuti and his two daughters Claudia and Silvia. Taking into account the superior quality of the terroir, the Cigliuti family gives absolute priority to the work in the vineyard and, once the grapes reach the winery, they are vinified with minimal intervention. As a result, Cigliuti is known as one of the star producers of Barbaresco. And although when he started in 1960 people called him crazy for working with green harvesting (removing a certain amount of grapes from the vineyard to limit production and increase quality), his wines are now a benchmark for being high quality and very long-lasting.
The Cigliuti Vie Erte Barbaresco wine is made from Piedmont’s star variety, Nebbiolo. These are 20 year old vineyards planted in calcareous and sandy soil at an altitude of 350 m above sea level. The vines are carefully maintained by hand using traditional methods. In the winery, the grapes are selected and fermented and macerated for 15-20 days in temperature-controlled steel tanks with native yeasts. The wine is then aged in large Slovenian oak barrels for 26 months.
First produced in 2000, Cigliuti Vie Erte Barbaresco is an extremely characteristic, high quality and long-lasting wine. A legendary Barbaresco of which only about 400 cases are produced each year.
