About Château Haut-Bages-Libéral

For many the A.O.C. Pauillac is one of the best denominations in the world. It is therefore not surprising that five of the Premiers Crûs from the 1885 Classification are found here, on the Bages plateau, in Saint-Lambert, in the south of the denomination. What is the secret to achieving these powerful, concentrated and long-living wines? Is it the sea influence? Is it the sun that bathes the vineyards? Or the characteristic gravel soil? “We don’t keep secrets about how a great wine is made,” explains Claire Villar-Lurton, the current owner of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. “The earth gives back tenfold everything we give. I am continually amazed by the generosity of the Pauillac soil.”

The 30 hectares of Château Haut-Bages-Libéral are undoubtedly in a privileged location on the banks of the Garonne and directly bordering Château-Latour (classified as Premier Crû). However, despite the different classifications, Château Haut-Bages-Libéral has nothing to envy in its famous neighbours. There are only a few metres between the soils of one property and the other, formed by a mixture of gravel, clay and lime, which drain easily, allowing the vines to ripen properly. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grow here and since 2008 the estate has been managed biodynamically. Overseeing this is current owner, Claire Villar-Lurton, who has worked on various family properties, where she learned from her uncle, the well-known Jean Merlaut). Together with him, she has discovered the secrets of the vineyard, where you always need “motivated people, who love what they do and who are not discouraged by the low status given to manual labour”. So, at Château Haut-Bages-Libéral, they are always looking for people who love the vineyard, instructing and teaching them, always seeking to keep up to date with new techniques and styles.

This innovation is also sought in the winery. Two fermentation rooms have recently been built at Château Haut-Bages-Libéral (one of them equipped with cement tanks), and the aging room (where new barrels are mixed with used ones) has been enlarged. Finally, after approximately 16 months of resting, Château Haut-Bages-Libéral is bottled. But the journey does not end here. Things are getting interesting for Château Haut-Bages-Libéral, which continues its journey in the bottle. Here the rough edges are ironed out and its virtues are enhanced, making it one of the most interesting wines of this denomination.

2022

Juicy and full of blackberry and cherry aromas. Château Haut-Bages-Libéral 2002 is a structured and very sweet red wine with meaty tannins. The nose reveals red and black currants, cassis, iron, tile, stone and hints of dried herbs. The nose evolves towards orange, rose petals and violets. The palate remains acidic, with a bright, chalky finish.
