Tasting notes Château Ferran 2022

Red wine Aged in wood Respectful agriculture. 12 meses en barricas de roble.

Balanced and appealing. With these two words, Château Ferran 2022 can be introduced, a juicy and generous red wine, very rich. Blueberries, licorice, black fruits, chocolate, blackberry, and pencil shavings emerge on the nose, giving way to a creamy, balanced, and highly attractive palate. The finish is long and penetrating.

About Château Ferran

Montaigne, Mauriac, Montesquieu. All three, each in their own time, were literary greats who shone in their own genres: essays, novels and political thought. This is why, with the name “the three M's of Bordeaux”, the city offers visitors a tour of the chateaux that were the homes and sources of inspiration for these three illustrious writers. In the case of Montesquieu, besides being a thinker, politician and philosopher of the Enlightenment, he was also a great landowner. When his father and uncle died, he inherited their various properties and then devoted himself to winemaking.  Something that was enhanced by his marriage to Jeanne de Lartigue, a staunch Protestant who, while opposed to worldly luxury, did not deny the pleasure of doing business at her wine estate, Château Ferran. But although it was Montesquieu and his wife who planted the vines to produce wines then certified as “Premiers graves Martillac” on this estate, it was Robert Ferran, a lawyer for the Bordeaux Parliament, who gave his name to this exceptional vineyard in the heart of Pessac-Léognan.  Five generations later, Philippe and Ghislaine Lacoste manage the estate with 70 ha spread across vineyards and forests near their neighbouring crus classés. An exceptional terroir that makes it possible to make its famous Château Ferran wine.

The vineyard from which Château Ferran comes from spreads across 18 hectares of slightly gravelly Miocene calcareous-clay soils. Here, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot vines are carefully cultivated, respecting family traditions. Once the grapes have been harvested by hand plot by plot, they are selected in the winery, destemmed and transferred to thermoregulated stainless steel tanks to begin fermentation. The wine is then aged in barrels, 35% of which are new wood, for 12 months before bottling.

The result of this work is Château Ferran. A wine that, although not as famous as some of its neighbouring crus classés, offers freshness, minerality, complexity and elegance that it has nothing to envy in those more famous wines. The reflection of the elegance of a terroir that Montesquieu himself appreciated.
